Born into a polygamous family in a small Nigerian village, Femi Fatoyinbo lived the Yoruba tribe’s religion and culture amid the political upheaval preceding the Nigerian civil war. When Femi moved to Canada, and then America, he experienced a world of culture, relationship and expectations that clashed with his traditional ways. "Losing my Religion" is the gripping story of Femi’s quest to maintain his identity—and survive a dramatic twist of events that brings his quest to a surprising conclusion.

I have had the privilege of moving from one country to another and bearing witness to the strangers that can embrace a new person and the strangers that don't even take the time to see another person in front of them........I have also had the privilege and honor of working closely at end of life and in time in a course with Nigerian Catholic Priests. I also live in a community of refugees from various parts of Africa. The history and cultural 'food' that was shared in this book have given me such a deeper understanding of another part of our humanity! I feel more empowered to embrace a culture that I see before me on the streets where I live. I'm excited! I was touched by many things in the book. What stands out for me is the message that a stranger brought Femi back to his roots/traditions/in a good way. It caused me to reflect and see just how many strangers (some have remained strangers...some have become close friends) have had a part in bringing me back to my roots/traditions w/out sadness but in celebration as I live my life forward.....the most important stranger for me was MYSELF! Learning who I was has made all the difference:) Ty for this incredible book:)I'm ever reminded to 'seek first to understand and then to be understood" :)

Losing My Religion Jide Familoni 9781483975177 Books Reviews
Got it for my mom and myself, i would be giving everyone in my family as a gift
Got my book in the mail the other day and took it with me to the beach. Always a good thing to feel you have been transported to some place else. We have all been in situations that have forced us to assimilate, this book is one mans journey of not only that but of the assimilation of the soul. I can't wait to finish!
This is a book worth reading for its literary value, geopolitical insight, and personal story. The book takes the reader on an emotional journey through Nigeria, Canada, and America, while emotionally and spiritually experiencing the local biases, perceptions, and cultural norms as seen through the eyes of a very dark, handsome, brilliant scientist born in Nigeria. I couldn't put it down. I love this book!
"Losing My Religion" is an engrossing and entertaining read about differences across culture, time, and geography that ultimately dares the reader to question how things that divide us should work to bring us together. It's the story of a man but it is also a story of the world around him, making for a deeper, layered, thought-provoking read. I especially enjoyed the evocative descriptions of life in Nigeria, the cultural and family portraits conveyed, and the vivid characters Femi meets on his journey from Africa to Canada to Memphis. Familoni weaves the threads of this story together artfully taking the reader through the past to present to produce a colorful, funny, and poignant tapestry. Be ready to think once, twice, three times -- but most of all to enjoy -- as you read this story!
My favorite quote from Losing My Religion..
Adìye bà l'ókùn; ara o ro 'kùn, ara o ro adìye
A chicken lands on a taut rope; the rope will not come to rest, But neither will the chicken! ~Yoruba Proverb
Ernest Hemingway wrote that the world breaks everyone, and afterwards, some are strong in all the broken places....
This passage spoke to me like no other. Our world is broken right now, maybe Femi's experiences can shed some light on how to mend it in the broken places?!
EVERYONE needs a copy of this book! Do not let the name deter you from one of the most eye opening, exhilarating, refreshing reads yet! Femi is a truly remarkable individual, he will keep you on edge with his everyday trials and tribulations. Many completed it in one night!!! Truly a read for All mankind, even the kiddos!!!
Losing My Religion is a captivating story of one man’s uniquely recounted history—from his childhood and coming of age in the Motherland—to the navigation of his academic, professional, and personal lives in the Americas. Femi, the main character, deals with issues of assimilation and isolation; of being able to live life on his own terms, and his intrinsic responsibility to the Souls who came before him to maintain and propagate his culture to those who are yet to come.
As informative as a documentary; as enchanting as a romance; as gripping as a thriller, and as intimate as a memoir--Losing My Religion is poetic, introspective, and even a bit snarky at times. It is a must-read for those who desire a glimpse into the psyche of the people of the African diaspora.
Jide's book is not only thought-provoking, but deeply layered, crossing cultural lines, historical events, and geography amidst a man's search for meaning and identity in a new world. I have rarely read a book that tapped the inner workings of the soul so well, nor read such rich descriptions of sunsets in a land I know little about. I felt transported as Femi led me through his young life and his quest to make sense of his heritage as he lives his adulthood in the States. This book made me laugh. It made me cry! Bravo, Jide! This reader wants more from you.
